Questions and Answers
Oval cinch mounts for well proportioned stones.*
Primarily used with cabochons, but can be used with faceted stones for earring drops.**
Very easy to set; just insert the stone and close or cinch the top closed with your needlenose pliers.
It is common to have a small space visible at the top after the stone is set.
You will need to add a bail with this style.
Choose your metal type and stone size from the dropdown menu. Please note that all available stone sizes are listed.
*
Please note that the stone should easily slip into the setting. If it doesn't and the stone appears to be too long for the setting, then the problem is likely that the stone is too thick and requires a setting with a wider bezel.
**
Not used with faceted stones for pendants as the stone would not lie flat against the chest.

A:
Ah, yes......the elusive "well proportioned" stone. It would be nice if the manufacturer could give us that precise measurement of depth as they do for length and width. I can't give you a maximum depth of each setting either, but what I can do is share with you the rule of thumb that I use. I can't guarantee that it will work in every instance, but it's better than nothing. So here's my rule. The depth of the stone should not exceed half of its length. For example, a cabochon that is an 8 x 10 oval should not be deeper than 5 mm. If it is, you will need a deep setting. Same rule for all sizes. When the stone is too deep, the cabochon will not slip into the setting. The setting will appear to be too short. If that should happen, return the casting without trying to set it and get a deeper setting.
