Q:
Will this center stone hold a deep cut? I have an Emerald, kind of odd size 0 8.4X6.4X5.5 I'm trying to find a setting for...

A:
I don't think this is the right setting for your stone. Before we even get to the depth issue, emerald settings are designed to grasp the stone at the corners (cut corners actually). Therefore, you want the stone to match the setting as closely as possible. The smallest stone size here is the 9 x 7. While you could probably "fudge" it a bit in terms of the length and width, the depth of the stone won't work. It would be nice if the manufacturers gave us minimum and maximum depths, but they don't. Through the years I've developed a little rule of thumb, which is not foolproof, but perhaps is useful as a starting point at least and that is this. Take half of the largest dimension, divide it in half and add no more than one to get the maximum depth. Here the largest dimension of your stone is 8.4, so half of that is 4.2 and so the maximum depth of your stone can't be more than 5.2 mm.
